OPPOSE SAN MIGUEL'S CUTTING OF MANGROVES IN TALIPTIP

Last October 10, 2020, ten men attempted to cut mangroves in Barangay Taliptip, Bulacan, the site of San Miguel Corporation’s (SMC) Aerocity project. In the same week, the Senate approved the franchise of SMC, driving away hundreds of fisherfolk and families in the middle of COVID-19 crisis.

Silvertides Holdings Corporation, a subsidiary of SMC, acquired an Environmental Compliance Certificate but this does not permit them to fell off mangroves.

We denounce these attempts that threaten food security and public safety which should be prioritized in this time of a pandemic. We demand the concerned agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Interior and Local Government to investigate and stop this plan.

The operation will further aggravate the decreasing mangrove forest cover in Manila Bay with only about 1,000 hectares left from the original 90,000 hectares. It will endanger the fisheries and biodiversity as mangroves serve as spawning grounds and habitat to several marine species. It will also intensify flooding, coastal erosion, and storm surges.
